Potato Irrigation

The dramatic increase in potato production over the past several years has lead to a corresponding increase in the demand for electrical power for irrigation equipment. Manitoba Hydro's concern over the high cost of providing three-phase service to widely-scattered installations led the Corporation to investigate the feasibility of using Written-Pole® single-phase motors for irrigation.

This 30 hp, 3600 rpm Written-Pole® single-phase motor is being used to pump water for a potato irrigation system near Sidney, Manitoba. The motor provides power to a booster pump used to move water from a network of 5 hp sandpoint wells to an irrigation pivot approximately 2.5 km away.
The Written-Pole® motor replaces a 40 hp rotary phase converter used to power a conventional 30 hp three-phase motor. The energy efficient design of the Written-Pole® motor has been found to reduce annual operating costs for this application by over 15%, while eliminating voltage flicker caused by the high starting current of the phase converter and three-phase motor. The ride-thru design of the Written-Pole® motor also eliminates the possibility of damaging water hammer due to sudden starts or stops of the pump, allowing the producer to automatically restart the motor in the event of a momentary power outage.
